چکیده

The vastness of water distribution systems (WDS) makes them vulnerable to exposure different types accidental/intentional contamination. Although most such contamination events that occurred in the recent past were accidental, criminal intent was involved a few. Considering accessibility WDS and potentially harmful outcomes drinking-water contamination, online water-quality monitoring sensors are typically positioned selected locations throughout as preventive strategy. These sensors, once positioned, communicate over cyber-infrastructure layer liable cyber-physical attacks—the sensor and/or its communication system becoming compromised or network malfunctioned part components is deactivated. However, placement state-of-the-art has thus far overlooked these attack scenarios. current study attempts overcome this limitation by developing demonstrating methodology for evaluating impact on network, compromising functionality partially. Our proof-of-concept, using simple straightforward scenario, revealed vast potential examining performance networks under malfunctioning providing valuable information decision makers utilities regulators.

Radioactive Contamination Detection in Water Using Wireless Sensor Network

Radioactive contamination is the result of regular operation of nuclear power plants, leakage or accident during the production, or use of radionuclides (radioisotopes). They occur throughout the nuclear fuel cycle and continue to give off harmful radioactive particles and rays for very protracted periods. Radioactive elements can contaminate water adversely affecting human health as well as aq...

Characterizing Cyber-Physical Attacks on Water Distribution Systems

This work contributes a modeling framework to characterize the effect of cyber-physical attacks (CPAs) on the hydraulic behavior of water distribution systems. The framework consists of an attack model and a MATLAB toolbox named epanetCPA. The former identifies the components of the cyber infrastructure (e.g., sensors or programmable logic controllers) that are potentially vulnerable to attacks...

A Attack-Resilient Sensor Fusion for Safety-Critical Cyber-Physical Systems

This paper focuses on the design of safe and attack-resilient Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) equipped with multiple sensors measuring the same physical variable. A malicious attacker may be able to disrupt system performance through compromising a subset of these sensors. Consequently, we develop a precise and resilient sensor fusion algorithm that combines the data received from all sensors by t...

A complex network theory approach for optimizing contamination warning sensor location in water distribution networks

Drinking water for human health and well-being is crucial. Accidental and intentional water contamination can pose great danger to consumers. Optimal design of a system that can quickly detect the presence of contamination in a water distribution network is very challenging for technical and operational reasons. However, on the one hand improvement in chemical and biological sensor technology h...
